REF: American literature genre, confessional novel

I'm posting this for a reading teacher that I work with that is taking a =
American literature graduate course and would like to do her paper on =
the confessional novel.  I must say that this one is new to me.  She =
wants to know if there are other novels like Scarlett Letter  that has a =
priest or minister as a character that does something bad or that has a =
theme around confession.  She would like to make her thesis that the =
Scarlett Letter is not a romance but a confessional novel - if it =
exists.  She did find a book in our library called Modern Confessional =
Novels, that's what gave her the idea.  Any feedback would be =
appreciated.
