Secondary: Bret Harte Story?

Dear Group:
I have a staff member at my middle school looking for a story but he
does not remember the title or the author.  We are thinking that it
might be a Bret Harte short story.  The plot line goes something like
this:  There are two men-one is a store owner, the other is the
employee.  The employee is always intimidating the owner, making unkind
and unwise remarks.  The employee cannot read very well and has a
drinking problem.  The owner of the store gets in a shipment of wood
alcohol.  The employee thinks that the wood alcohol is for drinking,
drinks it and dies.  If you have any ideas we would be appreciative.
