This is an interesting thread...but What Earl J. Moniz said, so much better than I could! There are times during my day when I think, "I had to get an MA to do THIS??"...but, frankly, it's never when I'm shelving books. In the first place, if I do the shelving, I know I'll be able to find that book again. In the second, this isn't a job done with blinders on; as I shelve, I get a better sense of which books are the most used and of the section in general. I can see if the book has been damaged, if the area is out of order, what is missing, what is looking old and dilapidated. Shelving gives me all sorts of information about my collection that is stored in the back of my mind: is it time to weed the section, to enhance or update? are these books accessible to those most likely to use them? and so on. But we all have different ways of doing things. I would much rather have a parent do a bulletin board than shelve for me.
