Our computer coordinator, as well as a few other people, has suggested loading the contents of our CD-ROMs (databases, mostly) onto a hard drive (on the server, or on a separate hard drive), instead of running the CD-ROMs on individual CD-ROM drives or on a CD-ROM changer. He insists that access would be faster and better. While this sounds like a good idea, there must be some drawbacks. One thing I thought of right away was the nightmare of having to add the monthly updates/supplements (e.g., from UMI) -- would you delete the old to add the new or.... (If you have UMI, you'll know what I mean, even though I'm probably not explaining this well). But then someone pointed out you could partition your hard drive and updating would not be a problem. So, is there anyone else out there who is doing it? If so, would you recommend it? Why? Why not?
