Determing number of books in collection

I am in my first year as a librarian and trying to straighten out a huge
mess.  For those of you who still have card catalogs, I have a
question.  I was told that by measuring your shelf list cards you could
accurately determine the number of books in the collection (1 inch = 100
books).  Is this true?  TIA
