SEC:"Grapes of Wrath" research

A tenth grade English teacher would like ideas for an assignment exploring
the background for the novel "The Grapes of Wrath".  Her students are
above average, so we are trying to avoid the "Cut, Paste and Plagerize"
syndrome often present when students are asked for factual information.
She wants her students to know how The Depression affected social
conditions, especially families and individuals Other topics include the
music of the era, and what programs that were established to provide for
those with financial problems.

TIA for any ideas.
