Tech: Visual presenters

We are getting ready to purchase a visual presenter.  The tehnology commitee
has
asked me to ask you for some input so we have a lot of facts when presenting
this
to the powers that be.
     We've seen the Elmo used in a lot of schools.  But it is very expensive.
 Does
anyone have another brand that you are very happy with?  Are there any
drawbacks
to the Elmo?
     How many of these do you have in your school?  We would be serving 700
students.
     What is the most popular use of the presenter?  What other uses do
teachers make of it?
     Is there anyone who sees absolutely no use for it?
