Dear LM-NET friends, I'd like to share with you a little story about what can go wrong when your computer teacher leaves. Four years ago we spent almost $1000,000 to wire the building and purchase computers and software. Then we hired a computer teacher. While I went through the network training with him, I have a library to run, and I did not concern myself with keeping tabs on what was happening. This summer, the computer teacher took another job. He wrote his resignation letter on a Tuesday and was gone by Friday. He didn't tell anyone the passcodes for the computers in the lab. We tracked him down at his new job, and he told me where he had written them down (about 20 pages into a yellow legal pad in one of his desk drawers). We couldn't find the master disks for all of our softwware. I called him at his old house, and his daughter had him call me. He took all the master disks for all of the software and put them in pocket pages in an old binder. Another teacher and I had searched for an hour, never guessing that they were in this particular binder. The worst thing is we can't find the master Password for the Menu Master program that is on the network. Our brand new Technology Coordinator has called him six times and has not received a call back. Finally she called the Menu Master people and they talked her through the problem. What's my point? There should always be a second person in the building who knows what is going on. Even if it just in a file in the principal's office, at least it's there if necessary. Hope this helps you!! ************************************* Karen DeFrank, Library Media Specialist Dorothy L.
