Since I got some responses asking for hit regarding the English curriculum for grade 12, here is the hit. Many thanks to all of you, including a few responses that came without names or schools, & which I was therefore unable to use. My faculty is very impressed! 1. Our English curriculum is as follows: 9th grade---- Study of genre/types 10th grade--- American Literature 11th grade--- British Literature 12th grade--- World Literature We have only two electives for grades 11 and 12: Communications Arts (Covers public speaking and creative writing) Journalism We are a Catholic school with small enrollment: 500 Hope this helps. Kathy Faraglia McCorristin Catholic H S Trenton, NJ 2. Yes, we offer English Literature over two semesters (Anglo-Saxons through Renaissance in first semester, Enlightenment through 20th century in second). It used to be a requirement for all seniors, but since then we've added three electives they can use to replace one semester of either their year of English Lit or American lit (they end up with at three semesters of American/English lit). We're a school of about 320 (60-odd seniors this year). They have English elective options of: Advanced Writing (combination of creative and expository), speech, or communications arts. American lit is offered during junior year. Freshman and sophomore English is organized by genre, plus a very healthy dose of composition, even some grammar. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else. Lynn Henry, Librarian Concordia Academy Roseville, MN LynnH123@aol.com 3. British literature is taught at the 12th grade level at Poteet High School in Mesquite, Texas Sue Wilbanks Librarian Poteet High School Mesquite, Texas wil@tenet.edu 4. Our school district teaches American literature during the 11th grade English curriculum and British literature is part of the 12th grade curriculum and always has been in the 18 years I've been teaching here. They cover Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, etc. My school is 1600 students grades 9 -12 and we have another high school in our district that has an enrollment of 2400 students. This is not an elective, this is the 12th grade curriculum in English. Hope this helps. Jennie Hoffman, librarian email - jhoffman@enter.net Louis E. Dieruff High School phone - (610) 821-2772 815 N. Our 12th grade English students study British Lit. with some world lit. as well. Margaret Shaffer Easton High School Library Media Specialist 723 Mecklenburg Ave Easton MD 21601 7. My high school is grades 9-12 and we still teach British Lit to the seniors. Just out of curiosity, why is British lit considered more difficult than American lit? Because Americans, both writers and readers, aren't as smart as the rest of the world? Perhaps that's the one reason we SHOULD continue to teach British lit. I think that if we don't have a good background in the world's LITERATURE, we can't truly appreciate the GENRES. That way, they can choose their preferences. I am in Wynne, AR and am the librarian, but I taught 10th grade English for 24 years and was dept.chair. Just think of all the things that students might miss...Chaucer, Macbeth, Hamlet, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, Beowulf. They might pick up some of these somewhere, but there is nothing like a concentrated study. ... Good luck. George Anne Draper LMS, Wynne, AR gdraper@wynne1.crsc.k12.ar.us 11. This 1200-student high school in a rather affluent small city in Kentucky does use English literature as the 12th grade course. I used to teach in Baltimore County, MD; they also use English lit. So does the Florida system I was in last! I think it's pretty standard; I also think (as a former academic librarian) that most college English departments expect students to have some familiarity with English literature. I hope this is useful. Mary Madsen Media Specialist Paul G. Blazer High School Ashland, KY 12. My librarian forwarded me your note. We teach British lit. to our seniors at Manassas Park High School in Manassas Park, VA through two courses: General English 12 (taught by me) and College English (taught by a professor from a local community college.) I cover the Anglo-Saxons through modern British lit., highlighting Beowulf, some ballads, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Canterbury Tales, Macbeth, some sonnets, Frankenstein, lots of short stories and poetry, etc. We use Elements of Literature, a Holt Reinhart and Winston textbook. Kids of all Levels do fine with it, as long as there isn't too much independent reading and as long as ample interpretation is provided for some of the more difficult text. If I can help, let me know! C 13. Name of school: Bellarmine College Prep 850 Elm St. San Jose, CA 95126 408-294-9224 x256 Libary telephone e-mail Jlundgard@aol.com We are a school of 1300 all boys. Jesuit school that still teaches Brit Literature, Holocaust Literature, Creative Writing, Horror Literature, Science Fiction, as Senior electives. We always have enough students interested in taking Brit Lit and the curriculum covers Chaucer, Beowoulf, and finishes up with more modern British writers. We also have Faulkner course and sometimes a full semester of James Joyce.
