Hi,
  I always explain that folk tales is the all encompassing term for the
different types of stories told originally by oral tradition including
fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty, etc.), tall tales (Paul Bunyan, etc.), fables
(Tortoise and the hair, etc.), and mythology (Zeus tales etc.). It is
similiar to animals being all encompassing for all the different types of
creatures.
