GEN: How much money for a core collection?

I am a 10-yr. business ed. teacher-turned-media specialist.  Am at a BRAND
NEW middle school (population 600 6th through 8th graders).  BEAUTIFUL
library setup, but "Powers to Be" forgot to budget for books.  Go figure!
At last minute, found $30,000 for a core collection.  The core collection
carefully was ordered by another middle school librarian in the district.
This money purchased about 1,600 items.  Am lobbying for more money.
QUESTION:  Who out there has started a new collection to serve a population
of approximtely 600 students and how much money were you given?  Would
appreciate any response to this as I would like to use responses to support
my efforts in acquiring more funds from the School Board.
