GEN: Weed of the Month

Dear LM-NET:
As you may remember, last spring Mike Eisenberg asked each of us to weed
our Space and Astronomy books to reflect current scientific information.
Many of us were amused and surprised at the books we found in our own
libraries.  We then decided to take on one topic a month, with the help of
SUNLINK, Florida's K-12 union database of library materials.

The topic for November is Europe: countries that no longer exist and new
countries.   Please do a check of your books and audio visual materials and
see if you have anything that needs to be tossed!

Here are some major changes to consider: Germany is no longer both East and
West. Yugoslavia is now five countries: Bosnia/Herzegovina; Croatia;
Macedonia; Slovenia; Yugoslavia.  New countries have been formed from the
former USSR: Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova.  Former USSR satellites now
independent include: Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia.  Czechoslovakia is now
two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.  Most, if not all, of the
above countries have new constitutions written since 1990.

Also keep in mind anything with ethnic stereotypes, or other materials that
are questionable.

THEN - share your findings with other LM-NETters.  Do you have a GREAT set
of current information about European Countries?  Did you find something
absolutely appalling?
