GEN: Weed of the Month Club

Dear LM_NETers,
Some of you may remember that last May Mike Eisenburg suggested
checking our collections for outdated materials in the areas of Space
and Astronomy.  The discussion that followed was lively with horror
stories of obsolete books and suggestions for new items to consider
when purchasing replacements.

The staff of SUNLINK, Florida's K-12 Library Union Database, work
closely with media specialists around Florida to help with collection
development issues.  We loved the idea suggested by Karen DeFrank of
Glassboro, New Jersey, that LM_NET have a targeted Weed of the Month
area!  In collaboration with Karen, we have developed a Weed of the
Month Club for Florida school library media specialists, and we would
like to share ideas and information with LM_NET.

As part of the SUNLINK Web site, there now are pages devoted to the
Weed of the Month Club.

Topics included are:  What is the Weed of the Month Club, How To Do
It, What to Discard, Why Weed (Space and Astronomy), Suggested Dewey
Numbers to Check, Specific Criteria for Weeding, Weed Titles Like
These, Consider Adding Titles Like These, and What is Collection
Development. Although this information contains some specifics related
to SUNLINK, you'll see much of the LM_NET discussion reflected here,
and we thank you!

Since many Florida schools were already out for the summer when this
idea was discussed on LM_NET, we are using Space and Astronomy for our
first Weed of the Month Web pages.

This month's (September) Weed of the Month topic is  *Native
Americans*.  Some discussion about this topic developed over the
summer, but we know that many of you do not have access to LM_NET
during the summer.  Therefore, let's pick up this topic during this
month and SUNLINK will post Web pages devoted to it on October 1.

Watch LM_NET for an announcement at the beginning of each month with a
new Weed of the Month topic!
