The deadline for the 1999 School Library Media Specialist of the Year Award nomination is quickly approaching. Thought I'd send the guidelines one more time, so that you can be sure your state's nominee is submitted. THE 1999 AECT/SIRS Mandarin School Library Media Specialist of the Year AWARD GUIDELINES This award is sponsored by Media Flex, Inc., by AECT's Division of School Media and Technology (DSMT) and Division of Educational Media Management (DEMM). ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Anyone in the K-12 educational media environment, public or private, and a member of AECT or an AECT state affiliate, is eligible for this award. NOMINATIONS There are three ways to be nominated for this award: (1) nominate yourself, (2) nominate a colleague, or (3) be nominated by your state affiliate. The award winner will receive a $500.00 check, a personal plaque, an employer plaque, and a travel/registration allowance up to a $500.00 to attend the AECT Conference to accept the award. AWARD GUIDELINES The entire application may not exceed six pages! The initial application shall consist of: * One page letter of recommendation from the school district superintendent, building principal or supervisor. * One page biographical sheet including the name, home and school address, and phone numbers. Also included should be the educational background, personal and professional achievements, and leadership roles of the applicants. * A written narrative not to exceed three double-spaced pages including: (1) the individual's philosophy of information utilization in K-12 schools; (2) a description of the individual's leadership in using technology to expand access to information and ideas by students, teachers, and the community. If the nomination is through the state affiliate organization, then supply one page written by the state affiliate stating why your association chose the person. The state affiliate organization may nominate only one person and submit only one application. APPLICATION PROCEDURES Submit six copies of all printed materials by June 15, 1998 to: Stuart Edwards Media Specialist Argo Community High School District 217 Summit, Illinois 60501 Six to ten finalists will be selected during an initial screening during the summer. Additional support materials, including visual materials/videotapes will be requested of the finalists. JUDGING CRITERIA The School Library Media Specialist of the Year Award is for individual excellence in the library/media field through service to students, teachers and the community at the K-12 levels. Factors to be considered are: * Evidence of personal leadership in fulfilling the roles of teacher, information specialist, and instructional consultant as defined in Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs. * Evidence of professional involvement in the library media field. * Evidence of providing a quality library media program to K-12 students, teachers, and the broader community by implementing their personal philosophy of information technology utilization.
