I agree completely, Jill. I am much more concerned that the children feel free to use the library, and feel that it is a good place to be, than I am that someone misplaced a book. I misplace things all the time; sometimes things just happen. I have found that the children who misplace a book are already pretty upset about it, and when I measure the cost of replacing a $15 book (or more commonly, a 2.95 paperback) against making a child fear using the library, it just doesn't stack up. Actually, I probably lose just as many books to teachers, or more, all told, than I do to students, over the course of a year. What kind of penalties to you have for the teachers? Just my two cents worth...
