Try the Hello USA series from Lerner. Kids like the format. I believe
you will like the reading level. Has fast facts, famous facts, glossary
and pronunciation guide in the back and great index, plus they are small
in size. Kids seem to like the size. I also have used Celebrate the
States by Marshall Cavendish and Enchantment of American from Children's
Press in various schools, often a school owns titles from at least 2 of
these sets. The kids usually go to the Hello USA series most often.
Hope this helps!

My fourth graders enjoy_Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea- by Williams and
the "Kate" stories...Kate on the Coast and the others by Briscom?...I'm not sure
of
the authors name. There are a series of books published by Oryx Press devoted
entirely to regional fiction that you might want to look at. I believe they also
include the
reading level.
