Hello everyone...
yes, I'm selling out to MSN.com ... MCI has done a fine job until this week
when their server in Fayetteville went on the fritz and put us out of touch
with the rest of the world for a time. . . I hope MSN has established a
more reliable system that MCI ... and I am willing to give them a shot for
my business...

I'm probably also moving over to MS Outlook as a email program as well ... I
was trying to set up Eudora Pro to handle the multiple accounts and asked
them for some instructions over a week ago and haven't heard from them at
all!

****************************

Well, the real reason I am writing this time is to throw my support behind
the latest entry into the "Internet help" arena. It is a book by our own
Marjan Glavac up in Ontario, Canada. It is entitled "The Busy Educator's
Guide to the World Wide Web." It consists of about 180 pages of nothing but
web site URLs pertaining to subjects and topics for teachers who are simply
too busy to go looking for appropriate web sites themselves.
What separates this book from all the other books one might find about
educational web sites? Well, the sites are categorized by subject and
include actual downloads of the home page of many of the web sites with
hints and tips on how to get to the good stuff without having to "click and
wait" your way to the most helpful spots.
The chapters include: How to use the Internet...Real Fast; What's behind
those links; Sites that motivate, engage and stimulate students and
educators; Internet projects that really work; Searching and finding
information for the busy educator; and Publish or perish...no one knows what
you've done until you tell them. . .
Each chapter includes something for every skill level ... basic
explanations and expert tips, they're all here. Those who are curious about
this web publishing craze and how to get a site for your school where
student work may be posted will especially enjoy the resources identified in
the final chapter. The chapter includes 25 reasons why you should have a
web site for your school, 10 tips on how to develop and design your web
site, and 5 places where one might publish a site for free!
Chapter 4 describes several recurring projects which have been very
successful on the Internet ... the purposes and participation information is
also included.

Overall, it is a wonderful reference book to have handy for teachers and
administrators who might pop in from time to time asking for specific
information about their particular subject area or education in general. It
is also a wonderful reference for librarians as well, Chapter 5 is all about
searching and finding information - with explanations about what types of
engines there are for specific types of information - people, newsgroups,
educational topics, expert lists and more...

It is a great tool which will never be far from this computer. . .a superb
reference pre-categorized for those of us too busy to stop and surf - we
just get to ride by the beach and wave...!

Stop by Marjan's web site and take a look ... < http://www.glavac.com >
