Regarding the proposed layoffs in Rome (NY) City School District, I have been following the conversation in relationship to the topic of the importance of school library media specialists to the educational process, the need for the development of an active PR program, etc. As a former Roman (Rome Free Academy 1968), and one who still has family and relatives living in Rome, NY, I am wondering what alliances the school library media specialists have made with other groups in Rome? (i.e. Jervis Public Library Board, Mid-York Library System, Oneida BOCES etc.) as well as identifying the powers-that-be who are active in the community? (i.e. local attorneys - two of them are my cousins -, Rome Arts Council, RFA Alumni Association, etc.) Additionally, is there data available, locally as well as in the state/national arena, that has been accessed and shown to the governing board? (i.e Colorado study, ALA's Information Power updates, etc.) Is strategic planning happening? Rome City Schools provided me an excellent education, as it did to my sisters, my brother, my parents, my grandparents, my great-grandparents, etc. The libraries, both school and public, made this possible. Do not let the Governing Board commit this error.
