I *strongly* disagree on this. Sports greats are *always* recognizable by
the lovers of the game! When children become interested in a sport, they
immerse themselves in it and seek to acquire knowledge about all facets --
including heroes from years past. Imagine if we had no access to books
about Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Babe Ruth. . . and George Brett will
undoubtedly find a spot in the record books along with the others. Simply
removing a book from a collection because the name is "no longer
recognized" may be extremely shortsighted and cause tremendous frustration
to the young person who is searching for a good book to read about a new
hero -- no matter that the hero is no longer actively playing the sport.

Subject: TV and effects on kids

I have a great idea. I wish someone who knows someone "in power" (where?
who? I don't know) would talk to them and make this suggestion.

I wish that people who write for TV shows like the Simpsons, Southpark,
shows with lots of violence (movies, too!), nudity, sex, foul language,
etc., would have to spend a week in a school. Not as "Bob Wickedpen,
writer for everyone's favorite cartoon, 'Sleaze Kids' " but as Bob Smith,
your sub for the week. They should have to put up with what they glorify.

Maybe then they would see the effect they are having on kidsand on our
society at present and (Omigod!) in the future: the foul mouths, the
disrespect, the fighting, the anger.

Anybody know anybody who knows somebody who could put this into motion?
Whaddya think?
