Several individuals asked for me to post what other schools are doing to
encourage seniors to take seriously the 12th grade proficiency tests.
Almost all those responded that they exempt the seniors from final exams in
some way. In order to be exempt from all exams they needed to pass all five
parts; other schools exempt the student from the English exam if they pass
both the writing and reading etc.

We established a committe which met the other night and came up with a plan
that we hope will motivate the students. Normally our seniors get out of
school a week before the rest of the student body. Beginning next year the
senior class will need to meet or exceed the state average for passing the
12th grade proficiency test in order to get out before the rest of the
student body.
Secondly, any senior who passes all parts to the 12th grade proficiency will
not have to take any final exams. We are also going to implement an
intervention program where workbooks similar to the Buckle Down series will
be ordered for the different parts of the 12th grade test. When the
students take the practice tests--teachers from those specific areas will
work with students. We will also provide help sessions prior to the test
for students.
At the end of May we will be meeting with the parents of next year's seniors
as well as the students and have a Senior Orientation Meeting. At this
meeting we will be giving the students and parents information about the
different things that will be coming up during the senior year such as order
of graduation announcements, when senior pictures need to be in to the
yearbook advisor, information about college days, applying to colleges and
scholarship information. Some of the information will be specific while
some will be broad based just to make parents aware. At this meeting we
will also explain the 12th grade proficiency test and the importance of the
students doing their best.

The week before the Senior Proficiency Test a letter will be mailed home to
the parents reminding them of the test and the importance of students
getting plenty of rest and having a good breakfast each morning.

We are very hopeful that this will help by providing some incentive and show
the students that the teachers are willing to work with them and provide the
extra assistance that some may need.
