Hello LM_NETTERS-- We are feeling the technological crunch of more demanding DOS-based software programs such as the Spring '98 version of SIRS Researcher on our LAN of 386 and 486 computers running off an IBM Server (Pentium 100) with Novell 3.12 and ICLAS with a CBIS 4x CD-ROM tower. Most recently, the double disk DOS version of SIRS Researcher can no longer be used since the company added more features than our computers can handle. (Blank screens with a three or more minute wait for an article is the problem.) Fortunately, we have other DOS-based information databases such as UMI ProQuest (Resource One Full Text and IssueQuest) that work just fine. However, I wonder how other school library media professionals are handling the general trend to deal with more power hungry DOS-based products. Or did you simply take the leap to create a Windows-based environment by purchasing new systems? Would you share any problems and solutions, any cautions or advice? What I am interested in is what changes and issues did you have to cope with to move from a similar set-up to a more advanced, Windows 95 set-up. Any help would be appreciated. Please e-mail me directly. TIA.
