REF: Rings in bulls noses.. no bull?

I know these got to be someone out there who knows about farm life that can
help out this poor suburban librarian.
My first graders want to know why bulls have rings in their noses?
Their librarian wants to know is this just a country legend (as opposed to an
urban one), the mark of a creative illustrator,or a real deal.  ( I have never
seen a live bull with a ring)
