Dear LM_NETters, I have been reading "My Sister Ate One Hare" to my first graders this week. It's about a little girl who eats increasing larger numbers of different creatures (1 hare, 2 ants, 3 snakes, 4 shrews, 5 bats, 6 (I can't remember!) 7 polliwogs, 8 worms, 9 lizards) The book is repititious, repeating "We thought she'd throw up then and there...But She Didn't!" The last thing she eats is ten peas - and that does it! To introduce the story, I ask the kids to THINK ( no hands up and no calling out!!) THINK of a food that their mother makes for dinner that they hate SOOOO much if they HAD to eat it it would make them sick. Then I call on each kid to tell me ONE thing they can't eat. Lots of kids say broccoli, fish, meatloaf, or peas, but today Anthony said, "GUM." I said, "You DON'T like gum???" The kid sitting next to him said, "Your mom makes GUM for dinner?" And Anthony said, "No, she doesn't make GUM for dinner. She makes GUM-BO and I don't like the GUM she puts in it." I had to leave the group and go into my office to collect myself. And THAT's why I will never quit being an elementary school librarian!!! Karen DeFrank Dorothy L.
