Many thanks to all who responded. Some also asked me to post information
I received, so here it is:

There is a wonderful site for you to find interview tips
for educators, a list of questions you can ask in an interview, and
creating a portfolio. I have followed the portfolio guide in designing
my
own portfolio. Go to:

www.teachnet.com/features/how_to/interview/interview003.html.

Explore this site; it is a great one.

Tell your teacher to:
Save copies of all praise notes, letters, etc.
Take pictures of classes doing the things she will mention
in an interview--group work, class presentations, etc.
Save samples of student work showing her grading comments,
                suggestions, etc.
Take one student's work on a paper, etc. and show how the
student acted on the teacher's suggestions and improved
    his/her work
based on the teacher's suggestions.
Save copies of all class information, meetings, seminars, etc.
to show that she attended extra things for
                professional development.
Show how she re-worked a lesson to improve it--have a copy of
her first lesson plan, and then a copy of the revised
lesson plan showing how she evaluated herself after
the first lesson and made revisions for improvement.
Get recommendation letters from other teachers, admin., parents,
                students, etc.
Samples of letters at the beginning of the term, instruction
                worksheets, etc.

I keep a file folder and just drop things in all year. At the end of
the year, I can pick and choose what I really want to include in the
portfolio, but it's much easier if it's already gathered in one place.

Just last week I went (on a whim) to a workshop on interviewing for
library/media positions. The panel running the workshop mentioned quite
a few times that they really appreciated/valued video tapes showing the
candidate at work :) Have also heard that many applicants are actually
hiring consultants to train them for interviewing....I think I'll just
stay put :/

I was just interviewing for two positions and put together a portfolio
(that I
think nailed the job for me). I found a website that had great tips.
I used a three ring binder with the clearpocket on the front. I went to
Staples, an office supply store, and got thisgreat set that had a rainbow
colored table of contents page with matching
tabs. I found some simple paper that matched and went to work. Now I am
going
to add to it on summer vacations and winter vacations just to keep it up
to
date. I would also add one of those pockets for disks that had things on
them
to share.

Look on the Kathy Schrock homepage or do a search in yahoo under teacher
portfolios. I think one
of those two ways is how I found the page.

Re: portfolio
Several years ago I went to a professional career counselor. I received
information from her about what to include in my portfolio. I don't know
of
a site or publication, but can offer the following:
        * have a general section in the front with your credentials,
transcripts, copy of teaching certificate,resume
        * include any awards or citations you have received
        * mount newspaper clippings and photographs
        * use the same type size and style as much as possible

I have mine in a good quality (leather) 3-ring binder. The inserts are
place in protective see-through sleeves. This way I can remove and
rearrange depending on the interview I'm going on.
Being a media specialist I've divided mine into things like:
technology,
community (volunteer work especially if related to my field),
presentations
and publications, achievements (included special projects with students
and
teachers).
Keep this up-to-date. Every time you attend a conference or give a
talk,
etc. put the handout in a folder. Later update the resume and put these
pieces in the folders.
Hope this helps some.

Our district looks at resumes, outlines of units, videos of projects,
videos
of teacher actually teaching in classroom, notebooks of activities,
awards,
professional work, etc,, recommendations,professional philosophy
statement.
Hope this helps.

As a person who has interviewed quite a few teachers and media
specialists over the years, please tell your teacher that brining a
portfolio to an interview makes a TREMENDOUS impression as many people
just walk in empty-handed.

In this portfolio, include any awards she has won, grants she has
written and received, as well as specific ways that she has implemented
technology into her curriculum. We like to see units of study that are
curriculum-based and that show an integration of technology as well as a
relationship to the "real world". For example, she might teach symmetry
as a math concept. She could use Tenth Planet software "Mirror Symmetry"
to work with her students and then the students could explore their
world to see what they can find that is symmetrical, i.e., watches,
kites, some flags, etc.

We also look for enthusiasm, and a continued willingness to learn. We do
not like to see total reliance on textbooks. One way that you could help
her is by reminding her of the library materials that she has integrated
into her curriculum.

Obviously, you feel she is a good teacher and she does know the
importance of a portfolio. So, please give her my best wishes. If she
doesn't want to stay in the South (and believe me, I would return to the
South at the first opportunity), then we have some openings in our
district which is very progressive.
