Carol(e?) Kuhlthau has done a lot of research and written articles on
affective aspects of research behavior in students.  She actually tracked
the highs and lows of students' emotions as they tackle a large research
project (e.g., elation at deciding on a topic, depression and confusion
and being overwhelmed when gathering sources, etc.)  Hope that helps.
