GEN: Calico Captive (Speare)

Hello,

Has anyone read this recently?

Something is puzzling me...
You may remember this book takes place during the colonial days.  A Puritan
family living in a fort in New Hampshire is captured by Indians and sold to
the French in Montreal.  During their trek one of the women delivers a baby.
 They agonize over not having anything to feed the baby except a little
gruel once in a while.

Does anyone know why the mother didn't nurse the baby?  Seems like such an
easy solution to me.
Did the Puritans nurse their babies? Maybe they considered it indecent? I
never came across this before, and I read a lot of historical fiction.

By the way, it was a very good story.  I would give it to a fifth grader or
older.  It is  probably more suited girls.  At the end of the story there is
an epilogue describing the real story this is based on.
