Hello, Has anyone read this recently? Something is puzzling me... You may remember this book takes place during the colonial days. A Puritan family living in a fort in New Hampshire is captured by Indians and sold to the French in Montreal. During their trek one of the women delivers a baby. They agonize over not having anything to feed the baby except a little gruel once in a while. Does anyone know why the mother didn't nurse the baby? Seems like such an easy solution to me. Did the Puritans nurse their babies? Maybe they considered it indecent? I never came across this before, and I read a lot of historical fiction. By the way, it was a very good story. I would give it to a fifth grader or older. It is probably more suited girls. At the end of the story there is an epilogue describing the real story this is based on. Thanks for your help!
