I appreciate the many responses received about setting up a program for student helpers in a K-5 school media center. Here's a summary: * Most suggested limiting it to the oldest students in the school so it is a privilege to look forward to in 5th grade. * Names for the group included STARS (Some Totally Awesome Re-Shelvers), Media Squad, McVolunteers (Media Center Volunteers), Library Club, Media Club, Media Masters, Aides. * Many suggested an application form, signed by a teacher, parent & student. * A time sheet of some kind was recommended to keep up with who shows up & only the reliable ones receive the rewards. * Rewards included Jolly Ranchers daily, certificates at awards day, book marks, paperback books, pencils, pizza parties, ice cream sundae parties, pictures on the bulletin board. Some type of rewards were given at least at Christmas & at the end of the year. * Several people suggested an Adopt-a-Shelf program where students are responsible for shelving, straightening and cleaning a set of shelves and their names are posted on their area. * The number of students participating should be limited to 8-10 and students who don't measure up could be fired & replaced. One school changes students every 6 weeks to give more students a chance & someone else changes at mid-year. * Tasks included shelving, dusting, straightening, stamping new books & magazines, setting up displays, videotaping for teachers, pulling books for teacher requests, help students find books & search on the computer, checking in materials on the computer, putting tape on the spine of magazines, etc. * Some had applicants take a test on decimals or shelf order. Almost everyone mentioned that the program was very helpful and fun for all! Thanks for all the input.
