I found this on Gleason Sackman's Net-happenings mailing list. If you are not already a subscriber, you might consider becoming one. This man must get hundreds of email message perday. He lists all types of Internet sites, conferences and meetings, etc., but he leans heavily towards educational sites. To subscribe, send email to: LISTSERV@HYPATIA.CS.WISC.EDU and in the body of the message, put subscribe net-happenings Messages come in digest form, but you still may get two messages a day. Most of my bookmarks resulted from the net-happenings mailing list. Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 09:24:23 -0500 From: Gleason Sackman <gleason@rrnet.com> Subject: K12> Hot Sites for teachers From: EDTECH - Educational Technology [mailto:EDTECH@H-NET.MSU.EDU] On Behalf Of EDTECH Editor-Hinchliffe Sent: Thursday, July 30, 1998 8:11 AM To: EDTECH@H-NET.MSU.EDU Subject: Re: <Search Engines> & <K-12 teacher resources> From: Scott Kerlin <skerlin@teleport.com> As long as we're on this topic, I will add a few links from my own online "research library" that contain directories of "hot sites" for teachers and also search guides as a small "thank you" to the many list members who helped me with locating new resources in the past few weeks. For Teachers and School Librarians, you can go here for a comprehensive index: http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/teachersites.html This is one of many collections in my Educational Research Room: http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/edResearch.html For search engines information (including a wide range of guides on effective use of search engines), go here: http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/search.html or http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/research.html (this is my "library reference room", which includes many other broad search resources in addition to search engines) In my technology courses at Portland State University, some of my students are school librarians, so we have focused on building image maps to help in scoping out our resources by category and subject. To see how I've designed my own library imagemap, you can see this mapsite, with clickable text for each collection: http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/librarytour.html Because I've designed my entire site as a "virtual learning organization", I also created an image map for the entire site: http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/roomtour.html Managing a large site like this takes a lot of time, but I'm continually exploring ways to make it most beneficial for users while maintaining it as a comprehensive research tool for both K-12 and postsecondary folks. Hope these help, and thanks again to all of you, Scott Kerlin, Ph.D. Instructor, Portland State University Continuing Education Instructional Technology Consultant Portland, OR Co-Host, AERA-GSL Graduate Studies Discussion List (American Educational Research Association) E-Mail: skerlin@teleport.com http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/ EDTECH has changed addresses. The new list address is EDTECH@H-NET.MSU.EDU. All subscription commands should be sent to LISTSERV@H-NET.MSU.EDU.
