Well, it seems that the 5L does have a history of problems, although some respondents voiced 100% satisfaction with their units. Lucky! Here's a summary, some of which seem to be contradictory. Please keep those cards and letters coming--it's still not working! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ here's how to fix it most of the time. Open the cover up and remove the toner cartridge (and paper). Use rubbing alcohol and a paper towel and clean the roller that grabs the paper. It's not easy to turn but it's worth it. I do this a lot and then get it cleaned professionally about once a year. I've also heard that if you buy really cheap paper, it works better (becuase expensive paper is treated with something that allows it to run through high speed copiers and printers faster which gums up the roller. Good luck! Terri Lent tlent@aol.com ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ If paper is caught behind the roller or torn, there are a couple of screws you can loosen which will allow more of the inside chasis to lift up partway. We've always been able to unjam it by doing this as a last resort. I have the kind of jam where you pull firmly maybe once every week or two. The kind where you have to take the printer apart by removing screws... maybe 4-5 times last school year. It helps to have crisp paper that you've aerated. I sometimes try to print paper on the back to conserve waste, and sometimes that jams it. Sometimes it doesn't. I'm really firm about students not digging in there to try to fix it. They are supposed to come and get me or the tech man. Someone tried to unjam partway through last year with probably a pen and they gouged a chunk out of the roller. We had to put up with a smudge on every copy we ran until this summer when we could send it away to repair. Don't give up! Most jams can be fixed by you or some other person who is patient and adept with a screwdriver. Kathy Bowman kbowman@linfield.com ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This is going to sound ridiculous but it worked against the frequent paper jams I had in my HP LaserJet. Microwave your paper for 15 seconds. Jenifer Swanson jswanson@tir.com ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I talked with my fellow tech, who used to fix printers full-time. He says there is a persistent problem with some HP lasers and there isn't too much to do about it. One thing that helps is spending more on paper, to minimize the cotton content so there is less tendency for sheets to stick together. (Somewhere in the depths of the paper specs it says words to that effect.) Keeping paper sealed against humidity until the last minute might help somewhat also. $80 to look at a printer sounds about right for that area. In this day and time many things are not economically repairable. JCORNELI@augusta.k12.va.us ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Someone else had better luck using cheap paper! Go figure... ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ One thing we have done that has let us get out all the paper jams we've had to date is to "borrow" a set of dissection tweezers. They are about 8" long and can get into the machine and pull out the bits of paper that get stuck. If you know anyone who teaches HS Biology, they'd be a place to find these "miracle tweezers." Patricia Vivari pllinhs@uriacc.uri.edu http://members.tripod.com/~LHS_Library/index.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I hope to have the miracle cure come my way soon. If it does, I'll do a second posting.
