Yolonda's genius, 1996
by Carol Fenner
This is the warm story of a girl's love for her younger brother.
Although he has a learning disability, she is convinced that he is a
musical genius because of how he plays his harmonica. They end up at
a blues festival in Chicago and Yolonda figures out a way to get both
of them back stage and they meet BB King. It is a wonderful story -
although the ending wraps up a little too neatly. The family happens
to be middle class African-American but the true story is the
relationship between the brother and sister. The book cover says it
is an Newbery Honor book. I picked up this 211 page book at our book
fair.
