Hi everyone, I need some wisdom on how to make good use of our wonderful magazine subscriptions for kids. We have a fine selection of magazines which simply don't get read or used. When they are picked up (while a student is waiting for class to be finished with check-out for example), they are quickly leafed through--no reading seems to occur, just glances at the pictures. What might we do to see better use of these nifty resources--distribute them to the classrooms? instead of so many subscriptions, get 15 copies of one or two and use them in directed lessons? get comic books instead? drop them altogether? I've seen magazines go over really well in a middle school library, but I'm wondering about their value in a K-5th setting with fixed schedule. I look forward to your suggestions and successes.
