The original posting was as follows:
I will have the opportunity to do a storytime for a group of
Kindergarteners. It has been requested that the storytime have a holiday
theme. I am interested in including the best readalouds, especially any that
might be multicultural in nature. Also, it has been some time since I have
done a storytime for 5 year olds, would they enjoy flannelboard stories
and/or fingerplays? If so does anyone have suggestions for some?

The responses follow:

I do storytimes for my kindergarten students (8 classes) every
week. I always use fingerplays - they especially like the same ones every
week. They also enjoy flannelboards, cut and tell, etc. I try to keep
the stories that I read from books fairly short - their attention span is
not that long yet. I do use themes.

Try:
The Magic Dreidles by Eric Kimmel
Imani's Gift at Kwanzaa by Denise Burden-Patmon
Lights for Gita by Rachna Gilmore
Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto
The Legend of the Poinsettia by Tomie dePaola
Latkes and Applesauce by Fran Manushkin
Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel
   Kirstin Tonningsen [ktonning@riverdale.k12.or.us]

My kindergartners love:
Chita's Christmas Tree by Elizabeth Howard (African-American)
Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto (Mexican-American)
A Taxi Dog Christmas by ? (New York City)

Yes, in my experience kindergartners still like to do finger plays and
flannel board activities. They like stories where they get to say a
refrain. I have several stories where I cue them to say a repeating
line. today I read "Sometimes it's turkey, sometimes it's feathers," and
I had them repeat the word, "Imagine." I also use the book "Along came
Toto," and they repeat, "Along came Toto."
At the present time I don't know of any Christmas stories with repeating
lines. The closest is a newer book called Jingle Bells and the song
Jingle Bells repeats as the story is told. The illustrations are really
nice.

Kinders love flannel board stories. I strongly recommend them.
For multicultural Christmas stories you might try
an old favorite:
Christmas in Noisy Village by Lindgren. The setting is Scandinavian.
and a new one:
Trouble with Trolls by Brett has a Scandinavian flavor too.
Not multicultural, but good for K for Christmas:
Cobweb Christmas by Climo
Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Seuss
Morris' Disappearing Bag by Wells
Night Tree by Bunting
Twelve Days of Christmas by Brett

For other holidays:
Chanukkah Guest by Kimmel
Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes by Heyward (Easter)
Funnybones by Ahlberg (funny ghost story for Halloween)
Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato by DePaola (leprechaun story for
St.Patrick's)
Lion Dancer: Ernie Wan's Chinese New Year (happens Feb.16,1999, Year of
Rabbit)
Little Bear Marches in the St. Patrick's Day Parade by Janice (OP)
Mother's Day Mice by Bunting

It's probably too late for Thanksgiving for this year, but I just got these
books in my TARGET/HIT, suitable for K:
I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Jackson (A Thanksgiving pie)
Little Bear's Thanksgiving by Janice (OP)
Turkey on the Loose by Wickstrom
'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Pilkey
   Joan Kimball Librarian, Writer, Storyteller.
   Clinton NY. jkim@borg.com

Imani"s Gift at Kwanzaa
Too Many Tamales
Lights on the River
Hershel and the Hannukah Goblins is a wonderful trickster tale but may be
too complex to read...you may need to do it as a story showing the
illustrations.

The kindergartners I work with love flannelboard stories. I give
the flannel pieces to them and as I tell the story, they put the pieces on.

Subject: SEC: CD-ROMs of biographies & US history

My colleague and I would appreciate recommendations for networkable
CD-ROMs in Windows format for these subjects:

     - 20th-century United States history
     - biographies of people from all countries, cultures, times, etc.

Thank you.
