TECH: Switching E-mail programs

I was wondering if there's any way to switch the e-mail program that I
use.  Our school's provider is the ESU (Educational Service Unit) for the
region, and we're set up to use Pine, which I detest.  I was wondering if
it's possible to use another program, and if so, how would I go about
doing this?  TIA
