Dee,

Crutcher's books do deal with young adult issues and dilemmas.  There is
a pretty graphic recount of a gang rape in a bar in Chinese Handcuffs.
The main character is also dealing with the suicide of an older brother
(who was involved in the aforesaid situation), and the dead brother
having fathered a child out of wedlock.

I think it is a good book to have in a high school library-but it's
probably out of place in an elementary collection.
