TARGET: Chinese history of early 20th century

One of my English teachers (10th grade)  planned a project around the novel
 "The Good Earth".  She selected an ambitious list of reserach topics all
of which require information on Chinese history, social customs, economic
conditions etc in the first half of the 20th century.  (I have a good
relationship with her so we probably can modify some of these topics).
Many of the topics focus on the role of women, immigration, slavery etc.

We have used SIRS, Newsbank, encyclopedias etc and found lots on Chinese
customs before 1900, and more on current Chinese life and conditions.  BUT,
finding material about the first half of the century has proved difficult.
I tried a web search and found a few things.  There is lots on the rise of
the communists and fall of the nationalists but that isn't what we need.

I would be most appreiative of any other web sites and other ideas for this
project.  I would also post a hit.
