Good afternoon fellow LM_NETters!

The Weed of the Month web pages on December's topic of Geography and
Travel have been posted (finally!) at the following URL:
http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/
We thank you for your patience in bearing with our equipment
difficulties and for the kind messages from folks who love Weed of the Month!

Would you take a trip using a 30 year old travel guide? Or a guide that
was even 10 years old? Of course not. As quickly as political geography
and travel information changes, you would want the most recent
information if you were making a tip. When a student is taking a trip
via library materials, it is just as important to provide the most
recent information. Today's global world requires students that are
"geographically literate." This month we are including a brief (hardly
complete!) list of classic travel books to keep or replace with newer
editions as well as a brief discussion of geography series books.
Reference materials are not included, nor are atlases, since these
topics will be addressed in a future Weed of the Month.

The SUNLINK Weed of the Month Club is an effort to help provide School
Library Media Specialists with guidelines and suggestions for weeding
their collections a little at a time as well as for adding quality
materials. Included are sections on how to get started, the rationale
for weeding a topic area, criteria to consider, titles to consider for
weeding and titles to consider when replacing outdated materials. These
suggested lists are neither comprehensive nor authoritative. You may
agree or disagree with some of the titles. That's fine! You may have a
more recent edition or version of a title that you would never consider
for weeding. Remember that weeding is always subject to your
professional judgment because you know your students and your curriculum.

When you have examined your school's Geography and Travel collection and
found titles to weed, please email me at the address below and we will
add them to the list (without your name!). The same goes for terrific
new Geography and Travel titles (or new versions of beloved classic
titles) you would like others to discover. Please also share your
thoughts on weeding the Geography and Travel collection with your fellow lm_netters!
