ELEM: lkg for resources to compile town oral history

A third grade and a fourth grade class in my school are working on an oral
history project of the town they live in (small town in Western Mass).  Do
any of you know of resources, web or otherwise, that might be useful to me
in helping them do research or to their teachers?  None of us are sure
where to start.  It all seems a bit overwhelming.
