I just completed a lesson that I just have to pass along. This was taught to 2nd graders but can be adapted for most levels. As an introduction to the non-fiction section I asked the children to consider the section to be just like Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart doesn't throw everything on a shelf just anywhere....they have sections for toys, clothes, tools, etc. I explained that there are sections in non-fiction to keep books that are similar together. I took the example one step further by asking the students to think about the Toy department at Wal-Mart. The dept. doesn't mix baby toys with baseballs or dolls, etc. each type of toy was in its own section within the department. The students REALLY related to the comparisons. I then gave a PowerPoint presentation giving an outline of the Dewey system. Each page had the section (000-099, etc) and a few examples of topics shelved in the section. I pulled books from each section and showed actual titles to the students. We discussed each section briefly for an overview. This worked better than anything I've tried in the past. The students were very involved and eager to learn the information. I thought someone might want to try it and see if the results are the same.
