Which scanner to buy?

We need recommendations for a which is the best scanner to use with
Macintosh computers.  I have approx. $350 to spend. I've seen lots of
things advertised, but am not sure what all to look for or which ones
actually give the best quality pictures.  I know that software is also a
consideration.  Which software shoud we look for?  TIA
