Somewhat of an end to the Britannica CD for Macintosh problem. I installed Netscape COMMUNICATOR 4.04 on our G3 hard drive. The version of Netscape which comes with the Britannica CD will not allow you to access Netscape Communicator's Preference options. I changed Netscape's Preferences to "Work Offline". Britannica will not start up automatically, even though this change is made. I discovered that I have to manually "Log in" on Foolproof, than start Britannica. With the Preserences changed, students do not have access to the Internet unless they select to "Work on-line" . When they are done using Britannica, I must remember to "Log-out" on Foolproof. This is a real pain, but if I want the students to use Britannica, that's what has to be done. The Britannica tech person told me that this may also be a problem with computers that use AT EASE on their Macintoshes. If you have the same Macintosh setup we have (Foolproof, and selective student Internet use policy) you may want to reconsider the purchase of the standard edition of the Britannica 1999 CD ($89). In future versions, the company may make Britannica less dependent on Netscape. This is a shame because I really like the content of the Britannica program. Claudia Mahlman, Librarian William S.
