Sometimes when we compare statistics like this we end up comparing 'apples and oranges' so we can't come to any real conclusions. But here are some stats from my middle school (6-8) which you may find interesting. I began working here in 199. School population was about 450. Student vistists to the library were 3,495. I call students visits any stop a student makes at the library - full period, 10-minute pas, immediate help, etc. Visits by whole classes are NOT included in this statistic. Last year student visits for a school population of 500 were 14,175. So the students do spend a good bit of time here or atleast visit the library often. But what is alarming is the fact that circulation has not risen proportionately. In the 1991-92 year circulation was 3,986. After a high of 6,144 in 96-97, last year's circ. was down to 4,919. Obviously students like being in the library even though I generally run a'tight ship'. New and great books (I do have a very good book budget) are always on display. Some kids don't even give them a glance. it is my experience that circulation hee is teacher-driven. If teachers assign reports, circulation is up, if not, it is down. I would be interested in any comments. Hildegar N.
