Edith LaForge --=====================_886327300==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" March 2, 1998 Read Across America Day Summarized from p. 7 "Dr. Seuss Day CATching On!" NEA Today Newsmakers February 1998, Vol. 16, No. 6 A celebration of reading is planned for "Read Across America Day" on Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2. On that evening, NEA wants to generate new enthusiasm for reading by urging every child to read a book. NEA's partner organizations in this effort include the American Library Association, the PTA, and Reading is Fundamental. MBNA America Bank, N.A., has generously supported the event. Many elementary students are studying Seuss's life and collecting and reading all of his books. Several bookstores are planning special events. Students of one elementary sixth grade class in West Lake City, Utah are collecting money earned from recycling aluminum cans; with discounts from local bookstores, the class is buying and donating books to a local homeless shelter. Members of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation's Book Pals program are recruiting celebrities for public readings. Random House has sent out materials to bookstore managers urging them to sponsor March 2 events. What can you do the join in NEA's national celebration of reading?
