web archives vs gopher

I just found time peruse the lm_net archives for January.  I perfer to
take a block of time and go through them when I can rather than have all
of that mail on my provider's server.  Using the web archives was indeed a
negative experience:

1.  Much slower than archives
2.  Can't mail message
3.  Have no idea where you are--no numbers on messages or pages of
messages
4.  After reading a message you have to wait for the entire list to reload
and even if it is cached it takes forever particularly at the end of
the month.
5.  For those of us without networking, low RAM, older technology, there
is often a transfer interrupted message if the archive is at the end of
the month.

I know that gopher technology is outdated but for this type of thing it
sure beats the web version.  Is there anything that can be done to improve
the web version?  Can it be set up to mail messages?  Could it sort by
date so that you just look at the messages for a certain date and not have
to go through all the previous messages?  Perhaps those of you with
better connections and technology are not finding this problem but there
are some of us just trying to get  by.  Thanks, Michele Missner
