I, like the rest of the Northeasterners and New Jerseyans, have never heard of the pinching on March 17, but let me ask you about another one (PLEASE reply to me so as not to clog up the listserv!). I grew up about 40 miles away from here, at the Jersey shore, and I'm trying to figure out if this was just something we did in my town, or if the "custom" is known elsewhere (my colleagues here in Princeton don't know of this one). Once winter would set in and there would be predictions about big snowstorms coming, we'd all hope they'd happen late at night so we could have a "snow day" the next day. The way to assure that we'd get the next day off from school was to be sure we all wore our pajamas inside out to bed that night. Anyone else ever hear of this? My mom & dad worked in a school not 10 miles away and they'd never heard of it there, but I don't think it was something we just made up.
