Elementary U.S. geography books

Our fourth graders are just finishing studying the states.  the resources
they used were encyclopedias, internet and books.  this exercise made me
aware that my geography books for the states are getting old.
However, when I look through catalogs to purchase new ones I am amazed at
the variety and the price.  My set which is outdated is  a Children's
press series .  To replace I would need to pay a good portion of next
years budget.
First,  I am wandering if other schools and teachers are just using the
internet and encyclopedias and not keeping their books up to date.
Secondly, if you are using state books which series have you found most
useful and most up to date? This would be for a fourth grade level which I
would need.
Thank you for your input on purchasing . I will post a hit if the replies
warrant.  I looked into the archives but did not find any information.
