*Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning* Included in
Indicators of Schools of Quality

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of
the American Library Association, is pleased to have participated
with the National Study of School Evaluation (NSSE) in developing the
Indicators of Schools of Quality, Volume 1: Schoolwide Indicators of
Quality. The Indicators of Schools of Quality is designed to serve
as a research-based resource to assist schools in self-assessing the
quality of their work on behalf of improving student learning,
focusing attention on the critical attributes of schools of quality
that are grounded in the research of high-performing systems of
teaching and learning.

Among the groups and individuals involved in working with NSSE in
developing the Indicators of Schools of Quality was the Alliance for
Curriculum Reform (ACR), of which AASL and each of the national
curriculum associations are members.

The Indicators of Schools of Quality, Volume 1: Schoolwide
Indicators of Quality is organized in three parts. Part one, *Focus
on the Quality of the Work of Students,* includes school-wide goals
for student learning identified by the national curriculum
associations of the ACR in collaboration with the NSSE. Included in
this section are the AASL/AECT *Information Literacy Standards for
Student Learning* from the forthcoming ALA Editions publication,
Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. Part two
provides a comprehensive set of research-based principles within
seven categories that consistently distinguish the work of top
performing schools. The third part of the publication outlines
strategies for putting the Indicators of Schools of Quality to work
in behalf of school improvement.

AASL continues its collaboration with NSSE in the development of the
Indicators of Schools of Quality, Volume 2: Program Level Indicators
of Quality to be published Spring 1998.

The Indicators of Schools of Quality, Volume 1: Schoolwide
Indicators of Quality is available from the National Study of School
Evaluation, 1699 East Woodfield Road, Suite 406, Schaumburg, IL
