Colleagues, Do any of you in K-12 schools charge fines for late books? If so, how to do handle it? For example: * do you charge all age groups? * do you have a grace period - how long? and then charge by the day? * Or do you charge by the week or month, or have a flat rate after a certain time? * if you charge K-3 for example, how to you handle that? Send notes home? * Do you find the checkout staff have time to handle the procedures involved? I am especially interested if you have fixed "class visits".ie lots of students all arriving at once. * Do you have a maximum fine level, after which a student may not check out other books? * Do you think they are effective in reducing overdues? * Is it a reasonably large source of funds for the library's budget. ie is it worthwhile from a financial point of view? * Does anyone have strong views for and against charging fines for students? If you can offer your opinions or experience on any of the above aspects of fines, or would be willing to add anything else, I would be grateful to hear from you.
