Frightening. Not in the least. I'd KILL to have a way to PROVE to a
parent who threatens legal action (having punched the kid's ticket after
they violated their AUP) that said student DID, WITHOUT QUESTION, VISIT
THE UNACCEPTABLE SITE.

Like all technology (witness nuclear science) it's not what we use, it's
WHO uses it that scares me. Could this "service" be
abused--undoubtedly. Will it be? Not by me, certainly.

An aside--What I do find frightening, in a downright hilarious way, is
that when I searched (via hotbot) for Cybersnoop, the first 3 (and 6 of
10) sites to "hit" were pornographic. Perhaps that illustrates the need
for supervisory software better than anything I have said. I LOVE
irony!

Here is an excerpt froma press release for a product recently named
"Editor's Choice" by PC Magazine:

Cyber Snoop V 3.0 allows you to retrace every step an Internet user
makes
by creating a complete audit trail of Internet activity, including Web
Sites, Ftp, News, Chat, and E-mail. The Quick Link* feature allows the
administrator to automatically link back to the actual Web sites that a
child visited. It also restores the text of incoming and outgoing News,

E-mail and Chat items, allowing you to catch predators who attempt to
abuse
minors. Version 3.0 features Web-Chat tracking, and a keyword blocking
option which helps safeguard against dissemination of personal
information.
This newest version of Cyber Snoop also captures the Windows user name
for
display in the Cyber Snoop Log, allowing educators and parents to
monitor
machines with multiple users and eliminating the need for sign-in
sheets.

Does anyone else find this absolutely frightening? Once the kid's name
is on this file, it becomes a protected student record and can't simply
be deleted. In fact, if the records are kept, it is possible that
parents czn demand to have reports of their child's Internet use
delivered regularly. Which teacher or administrator is going to read and

check all those files? Do you have time to check files for every machine

in your library? If you don't check the file, or you miss something,
and someone is harmed, are you liable?

Subject: GEN: Attendance

Dear LM_NETters:

I really need your help! At a very heated faculty meeting this morning
different ideas for helping to combat the increase in student
absenteeism were discussed. Among the suggested plans/procedures which
are being considered are:

       * daily attendance and participation points earned in classes
       * finish the first semester before Christmas
       * students can be exempt from taking a final exam providing that
         the following criteria are met:
may be exempt from no more than 4 final exams per semester
may not be exempt from a final exam in a college credit class
must have a "C" grade to be exempt from taking a final
one final exam exemption for no more than one absence each
          quarter
two final exam exemptions for no more than three absences for
the semester (a student could earn four exemptions in
a semester per the attendance policy by earning one each
quarter
          and two for the semester).

As you can imagine many of the teachers sre opposed to the final exam
exemptions. The faculty was split on the matter of ending the first
semester before the Christmas break.
I need to know what your schools are doing about the nation-wide problem
of decreased attendance. Any ideas or comments are welcome.
Thanks in advance,
