book challenge

Cynthia Voigt's _David and Jonathan_ has been challenged at my
daughter's middle school, which includes grades 6-7-8. I have been
unable to locate a copy to read. The book supplements the 8th grade
curriculum unit on the Holocaust.

I am disturbed by some of the comments in the local newspaper. The
school board members said they will require librarians to restrict
students' access to books at their parents' request, and that they hope
to rely on a "computer system" to alert librarians to books which have
"mature subjects."

I am opposed to both of these suggestions. I do not understand the
feasibility of the first, and I am unaware of a "computer system"
which will do the second.

I would appreciate hearing your comments about the book and the
suggestions of the school board. Thank you for your  assistance.
