For those who might like to get some practice in you can also go
to some of the public irc servers ... LM_CHAT exists on the
server known as orb.syr.edu, but there are many many other
servers one can visit.

Before I go on, I will tell you there is some advantage,
solice, safety <?> - something! in being on a quiet, dedicated
server such as orb.syr. The public servers can be wild and
wooly. Thousands of ppl are on at any given time and
I've received messages there that could make your hair curl.
I consider some of IRC to be the place I don't want my
children or students to go... It can make the porn sites
look tame in comparison. At the same time, I've made some
friends there and found the servers useful as a place for a
couple of my old college friends and I to chat.

If you're timid at all, I'd recommend patience and sticking
to #LM_CHAT as you know it.

For the brave who wish extra time to experiment - with chatting
partners available all hours of the day and night:

Some servers connect to EFNet. A couple include:
irc.phoenix.net and irc.prison.net
(efnet is the one i consider the wildest and wooliest,
especially when it comes to teenage hackers... But this
is where it all started. Some of the hacker stories
you've heard about took place here. So did some of
the unfortunate meetings between the innocent and
not so innocent. Consider it a slice of history I guess).

Some connect to the undernet:
dallas.tx.us.undernet.org
newbrunswick.nj.us.undernet.org
It's a little tamer ... or at least it used to be.

Some connect to dal.net. You can simply try:
irc.dal.net

The undernet and dal.net have generally helpful channels
for new users, channels such as #irc_help or #mirc_help
or #ircnewbies. The help channels on efnet can be rude.
I don't recommend them.

There are others too but I don't have all the info at hand.
Perhaps someone among us knows of some other, quieter servers
new users would feel comfortable exploring.
